 What is a domain name?
Just like your home address, your domain name address are the details that you give out so your 'home' or web page on the Internet can be found. To make this easier the details you give out to someone wanting to find your web page should be relevant, your name or company name etc. This is in fact the sole reason why the Internet address system came into being. A domain name is simply a human friendly translation of an IP network address (Internet protocol). So rather than your Internet address being 193.948.37.4, it can be 'www.yourname.com', far easier. The www. or http: is considered not to be part of your Internet address. This code is used to describe what type of service you are using ie www. is using the Internet service called world wide web.

Which type of domain should I have?
The majority of the Internet world favour a .com domain name address. It has by far the most listings world-wide and .com as you know has a far greater association to the Internet than country specific listings. A .com address also carries more kudos, as well as giving your company (no matter what the size) a global image. We do also provide country specific or National domain addresses such as .co.uk for the UK, fr, for France, .dk for Denmark etc, but there can be restrictions imposed by certain countries governing bodies, such as having to be registered as a company or produce a trademark to hold the domain name address. To find out more about foreign domain registration please click on our World Names Service button (on our home page) or get in touch with us directly via our contact page.

Why should I register my choosen domain name with more than one suffix?
Anyone can register any name in as many countries as it is possible, it is a first come first serve system. It is important to ensure that a competitor does not benefit from your advertising or branding by registering www.yourcompanyname.co.uk when yor address is just www.yourcompanyname.com. There is no standard to the amount of cover a company will give it's self but registering the .com, .net and the companies national domain is essential ie .co.uk.

Why is CInames.com World Names so important?
The majority of people will automatically type in their native countries specific suffix in our case .co.uk (with the exception of America's world recognised .com) to find the web site of their choice. This is especially the case when the site visitor does not speak English, a French man trying to track down your UK company on the internet would almost certainly type www.yourcompanyname.fr (so he can view your site in French).
We have set up our CInames.com World Service so you can register your company's name in countries where you already do, or could do business in the future. This guarantees that you can be located on the internet using your companies official name in what ever country you want.
Considering the expansion of the internet over the last five years and the amount of E-commerce that now takes place, we feel that this is a very important service for us to offer for any company seriously considering or already trading in foreign markets via the internet.
To ascertain your exact requirement we feel that it is important to talk about what sort of international cover is essential for you to have long term without the expense of a blanket registration, but also assuring that no opportunities are missed. We therefore have outlined a few details below for you to consider when thinking about what country registration's you may require as well as the list of countries we offer registration in.

What is involved in setting-up a domain name?
We prepare encrypt and send your choice of name and registration details directly over the Internet to the relevant naming authorities. Once confirmation has been received back from the registrars we can then set up your domain name on our four mirrored (x2) name server computers which are permanently connected to the Internet.

How long does name registration take?
Once your order has been taken and payment has been approved CInames.com will automatically request the registration of your chosen name(s) from the relevant naming authority. At the same time any email or web forwarding addresses you have specified will also be set on our systems ready for the activation of your name(s). The time taken for registration to be completed varies by registry but can be anywhere between 48 hours to 2 weeks (see Channel Island domains). To check if your name has been activated yet simply search for it using the front page of the CInames.com's web site.

 What is Cyber-squatting?
Although this phrase sounds very technical it is in fact very simple to explain. A cyber squatter is someone who registers a domain name in the hope of selling it on for more money to a company organisation or individual to whom the domain name would have more relevance. If you are a company or have a trademark and a cyber squatter has taken your name and all the alternative suffix's with the obvious purpose of selling it on to you at a profit, it may well be worth contacting the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organisation) to find out whether your case would qualify for investigation. We would also advise that you contact us as we have experience lawyers in this field that could help you come to some arrangement in or out of court.
